False discounts, tricky contracts and complicated cancellations: operators' dubious methods
DISCOUNTS THAT ONLY LAST TO GET YOU TO SIGN UP
The practice is well known: you benefit from a reduced rate for a few months, then the price rises sharply. And if you don't react, you keep paying... too much.
But that's not all: some operators go even further. They automatically activate chargeable options, modify tariffs without any clear warning, and play on the complexity of their contracts so that the customer can't make sense of them.
INTENTIONALLY COMPLICATED CANCELLATIONS
Even more worrying: some operators refuse to accept cancellations by post or e-mail. They insist on a phone call, with a very specific aim: to get you to go through a retention service.
The aim? To hold you back at all costs. They make you wait, transfer you from one department to another... and when you finally get someone on the line, they suddenly offer you discounts, but only on condition that you re-sign for 12 or 24 months. If you say nothing, you pay full price. But if you threaten to leave, discounts magically appear.
It's a well-honed logic: customers who don't complain pay full price. Those who do complain get discounts. This is what we call, quite bluntly, treating customers like cash cows.
